Announcement of the establishment of "SMBC Kyoto University Studio"

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, Kyoto University (hereinafter "Kyoto University"), Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (hereinafter "SMBC Group"; the group companies are collectively referred to as "SMBC Group"), and Japan Research Institute, Ltd. (hereinafter "JRI") announced the establishment of the "SMBC Kyoto University Studio" within Kyoto University. Kyoto University, which conducts original research, and SMBC Group, a global financial group, will work together to generate innovation and promote the creation of social value.

On the same day, the three parties held a press conference at Kyoto University. At the press conference, Kyoto University President Nagahiro Minato and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group President Tatsu Nakajima spoke about the background and significance of the establishment of the SMBC Kyoto University Studio. JRI President Katsunori Tanizaki explained the concept of the SMBC Kyoto University Studio and its future activities.

Next, a discussion was held between researchers from Kyoto University who will be conducting research at the SMBC Kyoto University Studio and researchers from the Japan Research Institute. Professor Nishioka Kanae (Graduate School of Education, Kyoto University) and Researcher Yamamoto Naoki (Center for Emergent Strategy, Japan Research Institute) discussed the theme of "Research, development and dissemination of educational approaches to overcome the cycle of poverty, inequality and abuse," while Professor Kodama Satoshi (Graduate School of Letters, Kyoto University) and Researcher Sawamura Kanae (Center for Emergent Strategy, Japan Research Institute) discussed the theme of "Personal arrangements, decision-making and support for maintaining dignity during and after death for everyone." The discussion was moderated by Takaichi Kunihito, Director of the Social Value Creation Promotion Department of the Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, and the researchers discussed the social issues they are working on and their future prospects.
