This time, we invited Professor Sin Yi Cheung from Cardiff University, who specializes in migration studies and social stratification, to give a talk on the inequalities in educational attainment and access to health services experienced by ethnic minority children receiving child welfare services in Wales.
The results of the analysis, which linked three sets of administrative data, suggest that social welfare interventions may be less effective for ethnic minority children, while the child welfare system may selectively place academically high-achieving black and other ethnic children into foster care.
Several studies in Japan have reported that children from alternative care backgrounds have difficulty achieving education and are at risk of falling into poverty, making it urgent to consider evidence-based measures.
However, in Japan, the hurdles for researchers to access administrative data are high, and such efforts have not progressed very well.
For this reason, the participants in the audience were highly inspired by the fact that linking multiple administrative data has resulted in research results with extremely high social significance. There was lively question and answer session, making it a very productive meeting.
